Marmalade in the Summer

Photos

It's been awhile since I have shared any photos of 'big' Marmalade with you! The good news is, that it's because the new shop has been so busy since we opened April 1st, we have simply not had time, the bad news is, you have not been able to see all the amazing stuff we have had in over the past few months, or just how fabulous our little spot on 'Main Street' has become! (In my humble opinion...) So I ran around a bit with my camera this morning and snapped up a few shots of some of my favorite things that we have in right now.

But the real reason I had my camera out is so that I could share with you my most recent project(s) and how out-of-my-mind excited I am with how they turned out!! Introducing my one-of-a-kind, hand-worked, free-range (er, upcycled) chairs:

(um, yeah, if this one lasts a week in the store without coming home with me....be impressed.)

And THIS ONE!!! Holy moly would I want to sit at my desk longer if I were sitting in this:

I am addicted to matching perfectly useful and beautiful chairs with perfectly beautiful fabrics (I know I'm not alone...) and am already working on my next few! (No, I am not upholstering them myself...)

In the future I will be smart enough to remember to take before and after photos so you can see the total transformation. For now, you will just have to know that these beauties were given big-time upgrades and will hopefully have a whole new life ahead of them!

What do you think!?

xoxo

P.S. If you have any questions about stuff from Marmalade, just give the girls a call at the shop (617.484.0093).

Two years ago (yesterday) I wore this:

and these:

and went here:

to join lives with him:

We were surrounded by family and friends

and asked them to witness as we promised to do our very best for each other and begin our adventure, together

a magical night was had by all (or at least everyone told me they had a good time!)

Happy Anniversary Coach!

A young marriage is a bit like having an infant. ( I am waxing a little here as I have only had one young marriage and zero infants) They need a lot of attention and constant care. They get a little bit fussy because it's often hard to communicate when you don't yet speak the language, and they pretty much need to be fed constantly. There are giggles and smiles along the way and many little joys and   milestones, but pretty much at the end of a couple of years, when they start to find their legs, you are just relieved that you were able to keep them alive.

A strong foundation takes time. You can't fake it or cheat it. You just have to build it. Piece by piece. I am grateful to be with someone who sees the value in that everyday and helps me to believe it, even when I get a little fussy.

A Taste for Turquoise - Style Board

Style File

The sun is shining here in Boston and it's gonna be a hot one! Thought I would help conjure up some cool ocean breezes with today's style board. Dedicated entirely to my second favorite color (though it is often a tie): Turquoise! You can call it aqua, pool or teal but any way you slice it this greeny-light blue has worked it's flattering magic on my heart. I paint a wall this color every chance I get and nearly everything looks good beside it. Decorate with it? Of course! Wear it? Please do! Dangle my toes into it? Don't mind if I do! Just about the only thing I won't do with this freshy-fresh color is wear it as lipstick...but never say never!

So, may your day be filled with dreams of desert skies in the evening, far away islands and calm blue oceans. May you remember the days of riding your bike in your bathing suit and the kind of tired that can only come from a long day playing in the surf and sun. May you plan outfits that include something white and flowy on your slightly tan skin with gobs of turquoise colored bedazzlements, and may all your turquoise dreams come true!

1.) Patterned Pillow ~ from PopOColor on Etsy, What a gorgeous pattern in this perfect color! Turquoise accents can jazz up even the most subtle of pallets and what a better way than with a changeable pillow cover!?

2.) Earl Grey Roller Parfum ~ by Royal Apothic at Anthropologie, the soothing scent of tea leaves in an easy and fresh roller-ball applicator. Perfect for the beach bag!

3.) Zig Zag Jaipuri Runner ~ Calypso St. Barth, OH! How I long for this long rug! I would however, need a hallway first. Details.

4.) Pool House Candle ~ by Lafco, You don't need to have a pool house to enjoy this most perfectly scented candle! For that matter, you don't even need a pool! You just need to love the brilliant French lilac scent and love very beautiful things. Check and check!

5.) Melie Bianco Nadine Bag ~ Marmalade (call: 617.484.0093), This large, useful and totally gorgeous bag comes with a cross-body strap option and the hope that you will get to use it on a fantastic vacation! Stay-cations may also apply.

6.) Moroccan Leather Pouf ~ Serena and Lily, My love for all things Moroccan knows no bounds; poufs are in no way an exception. I would have them in every single room.

7.) Frye Allisia Trapunto Thongs ~ Endless I don't know who Allisia Trapunto is, but she must have incredible taste in footwear. These are the most perfect color, and Frye makes some of the very best shoes I have ever owned. All signs point to yes.

8.) Dabney Bib Necklace ~ Loren Hope Designs Remember that fantasy about dressing in flowy white things with gobs of gorge jewelry? Start here.

9.) Rolling Tide Dress ~ Modcloth, It's often not appropriate to dress as an actual mermaid to attend someone's wedding, but wearing this adorable dress should suit your sea-siren needs beautifully without embarrassing your loved ones. Love the layers and the pleating!

10.) Isharya Bangles ~ Net-a-porter, I wish these came in bulk. I would like approximately one thousand of them!

11.) Le Versha Chair ~ Anthropologie, In my mind, when I take tea in my Spanish Garden in the villa that I escape to, this is what I am sitting in.

Do you have any faves? Do tell!

A little reminder and a winner!

Photos and The Biz

We have a winner!!! Thanks for all of your really really nice comments! I love hearing about your Curly Girl 'first times'!! I love it as the designer/maker and I love it for all of the shop owners out there whose shops are connecting you with things that you love! These shop owners and retailers are creatives and business people who go above and beyond to create experiences for their customers and create community around sharing the things they love with you. I am so glad that one of the things they love and share with you is my work! Please continue to give them shout outs whenever the mood strikes!

SO! Without further adieu... the winner of our brand new Curly Girl Apron is Kristin who first found us in Key West, FL (she hilariously wrote our website down on a cocktail napkin from Margaritaville!) Congrats!

Thanks again for all of your comments... it really made me smile! I took this photo last weekend in Newport, RI on the cliff walk and thought it was a nice reminder. Have an excellent start to the week!

Made with Love Give Away

The Biz

OH. MY. GOOD. GRACE. You guys! There are so many of you out there! Now, I am fully into the power of positive thinking and putting stuff out into the universe and not shrinking from your light, but being new to the blog world, I am literally amazed that there are over 200 of you Curly Girl lovers out there willing to comment on my little blog! Granted, giving away cute stuff never hurts, but I am always bowled over when people that are not my mom tell me that they are reading or post a comment. (P.S. Kathy Gallagher, I laughed out loud when you threatened to tell my mom!)

Thank you so much for your comments and for sharing your travel plans and exciting family visits. You guys are going so many wonderful places for so many wonderful reasons! I wish there was a program (somebody tell me if there is!) that I could plug in all of your locations into and make pins on a map so you all could see. I can't tell you how happy it made me to read all of your journeys...it seems like the news and the state of things is so depressing sometimes that we forget to talk about all the normal, fun, happy, beautiful things that all of us are continuing to do. We are going places!!

I wish I had an owl (yes, like in Harry Potter) that could deliver each one of you a pretty luggage tag for your journeys, but alas, we had to pick just one. Because there were so many of you we ditched the paper in a hat plan and plugged the numbers into a random number generator. The winner of 7 lovely luggage tags is:

Comment number 172 (lacks a little pizzazz doesn't it!!?) Allison, whose journeys will no doubt have her back and forth to Home Depot fixing up her new home! Congrats Allison, we will contact you for your details.

So today I would like to hear from you again! (I know...now I am getting pushy!) My product and this blog are made with love, and sitting behind this computer, and just getting a taste of who you all are and all the places you come from I want to know how you happened to get here! Leave a comment on this post and tell me how you first found Curly Girl products, or this blog. What you love about them, or what you would like to see more of on the blog. I am asking for it aren't I?

The winner of this give away will receive this barely-in-stores-yet almost too-cute-I-can't-bear-to-give-it-away brand new Curly Girl Apron by Demdaco! Think of all the things you can make with love while you are wearing it! (ahem, keep it clean...) The newest line from Demdaco is so incredibly cute and functional you guys are not going to believe it! I am so pleased with how everything turned out! (Thanks to all who worked so hard on it!)

So, leave your comment with a little love and we will pick a winner on Sunday July 17th!

xoxo

Traveling Circus Give Away!

The Biz

Hello Friends! It's that time again. The time of year when my dedicated Curly Girl staff and I lace up our travel shoes, pack our cutest outfits and head out to sell our wares at the trade shows. It's a bit like a traveling circus....we put on our tutus and a little rouge and twirl around for everybody hoping for applause (or in our case, the ordering of fun Curly Girl product by fun stores so that fun you can find it there!). Through the years we have made some dear dear friends at these shows and get to see their pretty faces when we roll into town. It makes the whole process feel more like a community than you might think.

This year, we made a dramatic change in our presence at the Atlanta Gift Show. We moved our booth out of the temporary section of the show (where we would set up and break down a big booth each time we came to town) to a permanent showroom in another building of the Mart. This was a big decision (that you can read more about here) and I have to say, that as I walked up to our bright and shiny space this morning and turned the key to open it (instead of building it!) I felt pretty darn good about it.

IT'S SO STINKING CUTE!!!!!! I just love being in here and I think that our buyers do too! (Here's hoping!) So, if you are a buyer, and you are coming to market PLEASE come by and see us! We are serving champagne after 4pm most days and are just generally looking forward to seeing everyone! We are in Building 2WW #690a.

Because I will be here in this nice cool showroom in one of the hottest places on earth most of the week, and because I get to be surrounded by all of this cute stuff all week, I think it's time for a little give away!!!

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEAL!!!

I just got to see and hold our new Curly Girl Luggage Tags from Santa Barbara Design Studio and they are so cool and each one is so cute that I can't decide which one to put on my own bag!

So, the winner of today's give away will receive not one, not two, but a whole set of 7 Curly Girl Design Luggage Tags!!! One for each of your adventures! Just comment on this post (one comment per person please) and tell us where your traveling circus has taken you this summer. While you're at it, share this blog with a friend who you think would love it (no extra points, it's just the nice thing to do.) We will pick a winner Friday July 15th. Good Luck!!

xoxo

I scream, you scream…you know the drill.

Photos and The Dish

Actually, the phrase should go "I'm obsessed, you're obsessed...we're all obsessed with ice cream!" Or something like that.

Coach and I got a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker as a wedding gift and ever since I have been staving off a crazy desire to handcraft small batches of frozen dairy deliciousness! I made a couple of attempts last summer. The first was Honey Lavender because I had just seen "It's Complicated" and wanted to pretend that I had Meryl Streep's Santa Barbara existence (well, ok, her kitchen to be specific). I followed directions to a tee and it turned out pretty good. (The pictures may have turned out better...) The end result was a tiny bit icy, and very lavender-y... which made me realize that the making of delicious ice cream is as much a science as it is a craft. It is a lot about balancing the ingredients and tweaking things as you go along, so you really in the end, need to know about what the ingredients do and why. I made only two batches last summer and vowed to revisit the project.

This spring I stumbled upon Jeni. Not literally, but actually by recommendation of some Twitter followers that put her shop on my to-do list while visiting Columbus, OH. I never made it to her shop, but was able to grab an early copy of her new book and have been reading it like a great novel before bed at night! I am newly energized, recharged and completely up to the challenge of unique, artisan ice cream making!! I hope my kitchen (which is NOT like Meryl Streep's..) is ready for this jelly!

I will keep you abreast (is it wrong that I laugh a little as I type that?) of my progress, as I'm certain you will want to know! But until then, this recipe is worth a shot if you have a home ice cream maker, just make sure the basin is fully frozen and you may want to edit the amount of lavender used, as you don't want to feel like you are eating a sachet.

Honey Lavender Ice Cream

You will need:
½ C.  honey (I used Savannah Bee Company's Tupelo Honey (not pictured) but you could use anything...local is always better!)

¼ C. fresh or dried lavender flowers (I found that the dried ones gave a slightly stronger flavor)
1 ½ C. whole milk
½  tsp. sea salt

¼ C. sugar
1 ½ C. heavy cream
5 large egg yolks

Heat the honey and 2 tablespoons of the lavender in a small saucepan. Once warm, remove from the heat and set aside to steep at room temperature for 1 hour.

Warm the milk, sugar and salt in a medium saucepan.
Pour the cream into a large bowl and set a mesh strainer on top. Pour the lavender-infused honey into the cream through the strainer, you can press lightly on the flowers to extract flavor, discard lavender and set the strainer back over the cream.

In a separate medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly pour the warm mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly, then scrape the warm egg yolks back into the saucepan. You want to make sure your cream mixture is JUST WARM, anything too hot can make egg solids at this step.

Stir the mixture constantly over medium heat with a heatproof spatula, scraping the bottom as you stir, until the mixture thickens and coats the spatula. Pour the custard through the strainer and stir it into the cream. Add remaining 2 tablespoons of lavender flowers and stir. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. You can also put this in metal bowl and an ice bath to speed the process.

Pour the chilled mixture into your ice cream maker and freeze as directed.

Good Luck!

Anybody have any favorite homemade flavors to share?!

xoxo

The Freedom to Marry

Photos and journal

Hoooooweeeee! What a week! This past 10 days has been so chalk full of wonderful things that I simply have not had time to pop over here to say hello! My real life is so bursting full that I will have to catch my e-life up in due time. That is a ratio that I am comfortable with. I have missed you all though, and promise to catch you up on all that is going on!

At the top of the wonderful-things list this past 4th of July weekend was the wedding of two dear friends. The wedding was so sweet, personal and filled with charming details (including Whoopie Pies!) that I just had to share a few! It should first be said that Ali & Shaun are two of the most interesting and lovely people that Coach and I know so it stands to reason that the day they wed would be full of interesting and lovely people and things. But, what really struck me through the course of their engagement right through to their wedding day is that I have rarely seen two people whose effect on the other is so positive and delightful, that though you love each one as they are, you cannot imagine them, now, without the other in their life. It would be like having a bulb out in a chandelier.

We loved spending the day with friends and family. The rain let up just in time for the gorgeous bride to walk with her parents down the aisle. Through their very personal and thoughtful ceremony we were reminded of the power of love in ourselves and others and of the true freedom that it is to be able to choose whom we get to walk through life with and devote ourselves to.

We danced the night away under paper stars and stuffed ourselves with whoopie pies. We all fell in love a little bit more that night. More with Ali and Shaun, more with each other and more with warm summer nights in July filled with freedom.

xoxo
